Seminar: Trends and advancements in tall building design for structural performance
Can tall buildings be one of the solutions for increasing population and expanding cities? Most engineers would probably agree that constructing resilient tall buildings can be one of the solutions in cities where more space is needed.
Dr. Naveed Anwar, Structural Engineering Expert, in one of his presentations provided a comparative analysis of a 40-story residential tower with a 50m x 50m land area can accommodate up to 200 families compared to a 2-story single family dwelling with the same area which can only accommodate 10 families or less.
Cities with limited space like Singapore and Hongkong are utilizing the advantage of having high-rise buildings to accommodate more city dwellers and the influx of tourists.
Skyscrapers not only provide solutions to expansion of cities but also serve as an important iconic symbol of a city. Marina Bay Sands is a landmark of Singapore, Petronas Twin Towers represents Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and the current tallest building in Thailand, Mahanakhon became an instant landmark on the Bangkok skyline.
Trends and advancements in tall building design for structural performance is the theme for the upcoming seminar and workshop being organized by the Asian Center for Engineering Computations and Software (ACECOMS) and AIT Solutions, Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in collaboration with Computers and Structures, Inc. (CSI) USA and supported by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) to be held from 7-12 November 2016 in Thailand.
The six-day event will feature two days of comprehensive seminar, three days customized hands-on workshop and one-day site tour at R&D lab for improving seismic performance, testing lab for wind effects for structures, and iconic buildings in Bangkok.
Participants will get insight in the new developments in tall building design, innovative structural systems for better performance and in-depth understanding of structural behavior and value of wind tunnel tests, probabilistic seismic hazard assessment, peer reviews and performance-based design.
