The International Conference on Earthquake Engineering and Seismology (ICEES-2011) was held in Islamabad, Pakistan on 25th – 26th April 2011. The conference was organized by the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), a globally high ranking university, in collaboration with the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (SCEE) and many other organizations in the field of Earthquake Engineering, Seismology and other associated fields.

The Kashmir Earthquake of October 8, 2005 brought unprecedented destruction to Kashmir and neighboring regions. In order to prevent secondary hazards caused by the earthquake and to propose structural retrofitting and rebuilding methods, National University of Sciences & Technology, NUST, invited representatives from the across the world including Japan, USA, Turkey and China to visit. After an extensive investigation into affected regions by Pakistani and Foreign experts, the Conference on Pakistan Earthquake and near regions was organized to be held in Islamabad, Pakistan. This conference aimed to summarize and further discuss the restoration and rebuilding of infrastructures in the earthquake prone zone in order to better serve the affected regions. 

The conference intended to bridge the gap between developed and developing countries by bringing representatives from both parts of the world to address issues related to earthquakes in a way that promoted collaboration and information transfer. The program included six technical sessions presented by professionals from numerous international organizations. Session chairs included Prof. Li Bing, Dr. Naveed Anwar, Dr. Mona Lisa, Dr. Nasrullah Khan, Prof. M.A. Bhatti and Prof. SH Lodi. Dr. Naveed was a keynote speaker and also made the closing session speech for the conference.
