ACECOMS

The Asian Center for Engineering Computations and Software (ACECOMS) was established in 1995 as one of the first centers of excellence at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). It aims to provide an impetus to the research in engineering computations, the development of quality computer software tools for engineering applications, and training on their effective use. Upon its launch, ACECOMS not only became one of AIT’s initial self-sustaining centers but also the region’s first of its kind.

ACECOMS carries out its mission through several integrated and interconnected activities such as:

• Conducting research and providing consultancy services for the applications of computing tools on real world problems.
• Providing general and specialized consulting services and support for project design, system development, review and investigation.
• Providing training and technical support for development of knowledge, information and skills in computer applications together with background information and theory.
• Establishing networks and associations with regional academic institutions and professional organizations for technology sharing and technology transfer.
• Disseminating practical information and knowledge through the publication of magazines, books, training manuals, technical notes and technical reports.

Software Development and Promotion

ACECOMS is one of the leading international centers in research, development, and application of computational technology tools in structural and civil engineering.

ACECOMS develops new software, customizes existing commercial programs, and helps improve software-related research output at AIT. ACECOMS GEAR, one of the software initiatives developed by ACECOMS, is comprised of nearly thirty modules for assisting engineers with routine design work. ACECOMS was also involved in the professionalization of existing programs such as GRASP and SDL-1.

ACECOMS partners with Computers and Structures Inc., (CSI) in the regionalization, regional promotion and support, and development of high-quality software tools for structural and earthquake engineering in countries such as Myanmar, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.

Associations, Networking, and Membership

ACECOMS coordinates its efforts with several esteemed institutions and organizations in the region. These institutions, known as Associates and Associate Centers, act as key partners that support by jointly organizing various activities including localization of software, trainings, research, technology transfer and sharing, and information dissemination in their respective regions.

ACECOMS acts as a link and hub for these organizations in developed countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia and countries in this region including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.

At present, ACECOMS has a network of more than one thousand individual members from over forty countries that benefit from and participate in the activities of the Center.

Professional Training and Continuing Education

ACECOMS provides professional training and education for practicing engineers from different countries. Training sessions are intended to provide both theoretical background to the computational analysis and design aspects of civil and structural engineering projects, and hands-on practice on the effective use of computing tools and software. The training also helps professionals to be well-informed with recent developments in computing and other aspects of their profession.

Publications 

ACECOMS disseminates practical information and knowledge through the publication of books, training manuals, technical notes, and technical reports.

Technical Reports include outcomes from research and consultancy projects as well as specialized technical information regarding particular problems and issues.

Software Manuals/Training Notes refer to special topics, step-by-step examples, and training notes written for the effective application of various software developed and promoted by ACECOMS.

Books and Magazine Articles are written and published to provide greater and deeper understanding of key topics relevant to ACECOMS.
